Backstage look at FMF: A cool little video with Don Emler for the Take 20 program

We first reported on FMF‘s new Take 20 Savings Program in our coverage of the LeMans Corp. 2009 Holiday Showcase. This is the program that runs through March 31, 2010 designed to increase dealership floor traffic and help move exhaust systems. For the campaign, FMF is reducing the suggested retail price of all of its street and off-road 4-stroke exhausts by 20 percent.

In this video, we get to spend a little time with Don Emler and hear some history about the famed exhaust manufacturer. It’s good stuff and a pretty darn good piece of marketing.

Exclusive: FMF Working on Pipe for Ducati Streetfighter

We at Dealernews previously reported how well-known off-road exhaust specialist FMF has been planning to increase its emphasis on the on-road market with its APEX line of exhausts. Today I received a spy shot of the exhaust specialist’s latest project: a carbon fiber offering for the new Ducati Streetfighter.

“The APEX line is doing quite well in terms of market penetration, but our product for Ducati has been particularly well accepted,” FMF National Sales Manager Doug Muellner told me earlier today. I called Doug after a source sent me a covert shot of the still-in-progress pipe.

“We want the APEX line to be as well-known as our other products,” Doug told me a few months ago. “Off-roaders know the FMF name, and so we want to build the APEX name to be equally as recognizable in the sportbike market.”

FMF offers three types of sportbike pipe – the Powercore S, Powercore GP and APEX – and plans to put more energy into marketing its offerings.

The APEX exhaust comes in carbon or titanium, slip-on or full, and single and dual systems; the Powercore GP is a MotoGP-type titanium race pipe, and the Powercore S line is available in titanium and aluminum and comes with a titanium mid-pipe (if applicable).

FMF’s other new applications include product for the 2009 Ducati Monster 1100, 696, 848, 1098, 1198 and 1198S; Honda CBR1000RR and CBR600RR; Kawasaki ER-6N, Ninja 250R, Ninja 650R, ZX-6R and ZX-10R; KTM 690 SMC; Suzuki GSX-R600, GSX-R750, GSX-R1000 and Hayabusa; and Yamaha R6 and R1.

Aftermarket Industry — Strength in Numbers

Other than my pure, ridiculous love for most two-wheeled vehicles, the thing that gets me most about the motorcycle (powersports) industry is the insanely high level of ingenuity and creativity. While there is no shortage of somewhat useless gadgetry (you know it when you see) making it to market, the vast majority of products out there are nothing short of genius.

Just take a look at the stuff that’ll be on display at Dealer Expo (also, here and here) and at the V-Twin Expo in February. The parts and bikes built by Steve Storz? Roland Sands and his dad, Perry? Bert Baker? Look at what small companies like Nash Motorcycle Co. and Biltwell Inc. are doing. How about FMF‘s long storied history? Phil Davy has turned ICON into, well, an icon. The stuff coming out of Robert Fisher’s and Nick Anglada’s garages? Crazy. Honestly, the list is mind-blowing crosses across all market niches and extends as far back as does motorcycling. My own personal favorite is Chopper Dave. His work kills me.

So considering all these aftermarket players, what happens when the economy takes a dump? Well, it looks like a bunch of them are looking to band together under the auspices of automotive industry heavyweight SEMA to protect their interests. Bikernet.com‘s Keith Ball is calling together the troops for a meeting at the V-Twin Show in Cincy. His goal is to give the aftermarket — and the attendant bodies such as vendors, dealers, clubs, etc. — a strong, unified voice in these shaky times. By banding together under SEMA, the motorcycle aftermarket industry would be able to access the advocacy group’s massive list of services. These run the gamut from business resources to market research to OEM relation services to SEMA’s massive trade show.
