RSD/Victory Motorcycles: Project 200 Video

When I first saw pictures (stolen from Cameron Brewer over at RSD: Thanks Cameron!) of the custom Vegas 8-Ball that Roland Sands is doing for Victory Motorcycles, I immediately fell in lust over its swoopy profile. That new tail section and dropped down seat, combined with the full fairing, really highlighted the design lines that Victory is known for. (It should probably be noted that I’m an Roland Sands Design and Victory sycophant — I just like the stuff that they do when they do what they do.)

Then I got really excited (starting to creep myself out here) when reading about what RSD is attempting to do with this bike. It’s called Project 200 and it’s Sands’ effort at building a bike aimed at hitting a Modified Partial Streamlining (MPS) record. Here’s a ‘graph from the RSD blog that explains it in RD’s words:

This Victory project is for the sole purpose of going 200mph. What started off as a move to do something different with a Victory turned into a quest for the 200mph marker. This has been a personal goal of mine for sometime and to do it on what was a custom cruiser makes it much harder and more interesting. Adding the bodywork and performance parts lends itself to setting this bike apart as a true high speed performer. It will soon be getting a turbo motor which will make it a 200 plus HP beast for both landspeed and the drag strip.

So now that Victory has announced its 2011 lineup and RSD had a chance to show this beast to the dealers attending the Polaris/Victory dealer meeting, this video has been posted.

It shows the early stages of Sands’ quest to hit 200 mph. We’ll try to follow along as they post more vids. Could watch stuff like this all day. Well I could if I got paid for it, so until then I’ll link to videos when they come online and then go back to my work-a-day tasks such as reading press releases, interviewing folks and pining for future press rides.

Aprilia Fastest Bike at Pikes Peak … Again

The formal results are in: Piloting a 2009 Aprilia SXV550, Davey Durelle was the fastest motorcycle up the hill at the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb on July 19.PikesPeak_logo

The Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, first held in 1916, features a course that climbs 12.42 miles, has 156 turns and starts at 9,390 ft. climbing to over 14,000 ft. Durelle completed the treacherous run in an astounding 11:48.649 minutes. It was his 13th personal victory at the event and the second year in a row he took the title of fastest motorcycle on the mountain.

Durelle finished a split second ahead of Gary Trachy aboard a 2008 KTM SMX. Both raced in the 750cc class.

PikesPeak1Durelle grabbed the hole shot and lead for the first two miles before Trachy made a pass for the lead. Trachy stretched his lead to five seconds before Durelle used the power of the SXV to close the gap in the wide open dirt section and re-passed him for the lead less then a mile from the summit. Durelle and Trachy battled side by side to the top finishing a mere .094 seconds apart – one of the closest finishes in the history of the event.

The fastest ATV on the mountain was a 2008 Honda 450 piloted by Michael Coburn with a time of 12:18.858 minutes.

AGV Protects Jordan’s Skull

Michael Jordan showed up at last weekend’s fifth round of the AMA Superbike series at Infineon Raceway to support his team, as is usual for the motorcycle fan.

Jordan, after watching qualifications on Friday, jumped on a bike (a Ducati Multistrada) and went for a ride in the beautiful countryside of Sonoma protected with an AGV helmet.

The helmet on Jordan’s bean was one of the many helmets from the National Guard Jordan Suzuki Racing Experience: the 2-Up program sponsored by Dainese and AGV.

The 2-Up program, during which all riders participating are protected head-to-toe with Dainese leathers, gloves, boots and AGV helmets, provides an exclusive on-track experience for members of the media and other selected guests at each round of the AMA National Guard Pro Racing Superbike Series.

Rally Hero Scot Harden Featured on Scorpion TV

Motorcycle rally champion Scot Harden blazed a trail to Scorpion Sports HQ last week to talk about the helmet and apparel supplier’s new XDR Collection.

XDR stands for “Xtreme Distance Riding” so nobody is more qualified to talk about what goes into great riding gear than Harden. During his trip to Scorpion, he took the time to point out some of the many features and benefits that differentiate the XDR Collection from ordinary gear. Fortunately, the cameras were rolling and a short video clip now appears at Scorpion’s home page, while a longer version where Scot discusses rallying with Scorpion VP Eric Anderson appears at the ScorpionNation YouTube site .

Harden is a member of the American Motorcyclist Association Motorcycle Hall of Fame. He has served as African Rally champion, two-time Dakar Rally veteran, three-time Baja 500 and Baja 1000 Overall champion, three-time ISDE medalist, U.S. Trophy Team member and two-time AMA Amateur National Off-road champion.

Last August, Harden was hired as national sales and marketing manager of Husqvarna Motorcycles NA, LLC. Prior to that he spearheaded corporate marketing strategies, product development and sales for KTM North America.

During his Hall Of Fame racing career, Harden has logged more than 200,000 off road miles that is enough to circumnavigate the entire planet eight times. I suggest anyone having a chance to talk with Scot jump at the opportunity.

KTM 450 Beats Citroën C4 WRC in Hillclimb

British TV show Fifth Gear first showed that a Ducati 999 was a tick quicker than a Lamborghini Gallardo around a track, and now ten time world motocross champion Stefan Everts, riding a KTM 450, beat five-time rally champion Sébastien Loeb and his Citroën C4 WRC car up the Geraardsbergen Wall in Belgium.

OK, so Everts was only one tenth of a second ahead – traversing a slippery cobblestone-laden street to reach the top of the hill in 49:07 seconds compared to 49:17 for Loeb.

Still, what started as an innocent competition (a gentleman’s bet, if you will) between two top athletes turned into an exceptional duel. It was Everts who challenged Loeb a few weeks ago. Then the marketing wizkids at Red Bull turned it into an event, the Red Bull Motorclash.

The loser of the duel had to do some labor: clean the vehicle of his opponent. Loeb put up no resistance at all to carrying out his assignment and showed no sign of disappointment afterwards: “I thought this duel was a tremendous idea and I have no problems with Stefan winning it,” he said. “The difference is so small, it could have gone either way.”

Vehicles are not usually allowed on the Wall, but with the permission and co-operation of the town of Geraardsbergen and the police, everything ran seamlessly and safely.

Malcolm Smith is Dealernews’ Dealer of the Year

In case you missed it: Malcolm Smith Motorsports was named “Dealer of the Year” by Dealernews magazine’s Top 100 Dealer Program.malcolmsmith_2008jpg-copy

Malcolm is one of the most impressive and best-loved legends in motorcycling. As the raucous applause at the Indiana Roof Ballroom attested to, Mr. Smith and his team were more than deserving of the top prize at the 18th annual Top 100 Awards.

I had the pleasure of joining Malcolm and his family and team members at dinner following the festivities. Much to my delight, we were also joined by Bruce Brown. For those who don’t know, Bruce is a filmmaker perhaps best known for the surf film The Endless Summer (1964) and the motorcycle film On Any Sunday (1971). As Malcolm told me of On Any Sunday, “Bruce put me on the map with that movie.”

Sitting between those two, listening to an evening of stories about Steve McQueen, Hawaii, Dakar and a zany cast of characters, was perhaps the greatest treat I’ve been allowed to have during my time in the industry.

Dainese D-air Suit Making Headlines … Again

Dainese has been making headlines this week with its D-air Racing airbag suit. Of course, many of us who follow motorcycle racing and related parts, garments and accessories first saw the suit in action in 2007, when Dainese-sponsored 250cc MotoGP rider Marco Simoncelli high-sided during practice in Valencia.d_air

The D-air Racing suit is the product of more than 10 years of study and experiments by D-Tec, the Dainese R&D department.

As the name suggests, the D-air is a suit that incorporates a system of airbags to protect a rider’s body in areas that conventional protections leave exposed: shoulders, collarbones and neck. The entire system is contained in an attachment on the rider’s shoulders and back, which takes the place of the traditional “hump.”  And, unlike the Hit-Air apparel made by Mugen Denko, the D-air Racing airbags are triggered not by a coiled wire but when the rider leaves the bike at a certain velocity.

Helmet House Launches YouTube Channel

Riding gear distributor Helmet House has created a YouTube channel offering videos aimed specifically at motorcyclists.

Helmet House distributes product from Cortech, Tour Master, Shoei, HJC, TCX and Utopia. The company plans to use its YouTube channel to post videos of racers, events, rides and interviews with industry personalities, plus helpful tips on hooking up with the right equipment to match specific riding needs.

Some of the first videos include behind-the-scenes interviews with road-racing champions Ben Bostrom and Jake Zemke, the story of Jason McVicar – who set a land-speed record at Bonneville and then later in the day set the record for the fastest survived crash – and a feature on Cortech and Tour Master jackets in action.

“We are excited about bringing fresh insights to riding enthusiasts through YouTube,” says Richard Kimes, director of marketing, Helmet House. “Viewers will be able to enjoy entertaining video clips and also learn about the many elements that go into making superior riding gear. In short, this new Helmet House YouTube channel will be a great way to get closer to the sport of motorcycling.”

KTM RC 125 GP Race Bikes for Sale

The 2008 U.S. AMA Red Bull Rookies Cup KTM RC 125 race bikes are now for sale through HMC Racing.

There are a limited number of Rookies Cup bikes available, 24 to be exact. Each bike has been refurbished and comes “Ready to Race.” While the Red Bull Rookies Cup will not be held in the U.S. in 2009, the series will continue on in Europe.

Ducati Going Superbike Racing in the U.S.

Ducati plans to take part in Superbike racing in North America in the 2009 season.

Ducati North America CEO Michael Lock, in an interview this morning, told me U.S. pilots will be competing in the series aboard the 1098 F08 – the same factory superbike used by Troy Bayliss in 2008.

Oh, but because of airbox-related rules in the World Superbike Championship that aren’t present in the North American series, expect the U.S.-spec Duc to produce about 10hp more than the unit ridden by Bayliss.

Superbike racing in the U.S. will be run by the Daytona Motorsports Group (DMG) doing business as AMA Pro Racing. American Superbike is scheduled to be the new premier class for AMA Pro Racing, showcasing the traditional 1,000cc machines that competed in the former AMA Superbike class but running under new rules.
